Nottingham Forest striker Dexter Blackstock stoked hopes of a shock result at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium when he equalised Eddie Johnson's opener for the visitors.
Johnson however netted a late winner to keep the USA, coached by Jurgen Klinsmann, firmly on course for a place in the final round of qualifying.
In other Forest news, manager Sean O'Driscoll has praised supporters for their backing this season and urged them to keep showing patience as the Reds look to play the type of football that their new boss is known for.
He told the Evening Post: "We do not want to disappointment and, if we do have to disappoint them, let's do it in a way where they can at least see that we have given it a go.
"And by that I do not mean that we have ran around and crashed into tackles.
"I am talking about being brave and doing things how we want to do them."
