In their first season in the Championship, Bristol City came close to winning promotion only to fall at the final hurdle in Saturday's play-off final against Hull City.
"The players here are capable of making the step-up, that is for certain," Nathan Tyson told the Nottingham Evening Post.
"Perhaps we can take a few people by surprise. Reading have done it in the past and Bristol City have done it as well this season.
"We are not there to make up the numbers. We are there on merit and, while we made it hard for ourselves, we got there in the end.
"The goal for next season is promotion."
