With relegated Burnley renewing their interest in Henri Lansbury according to reports in the Nottingham Post, Freedman again has a decision to make on whether to lose another player he would like to stay at the club (as he admitted this week he would have liked Jamie Mackie to have done) in a bid to eventually loosen some of the FFP sanctions and also give him a bit of leeway to make the likes of Nicky Maynard a contract offer.
But, while the summer has not seen the parade of new signings that fans like to see, could working with a relatively small but settled group work in Freedman's favour?
His injection of youth into the team during pre-season looks to have provided a boost while the likes of Robert Tesche, Chris Burke and Maynard, if signed, will hopefully be bursting to prove themselves.
Writing in his programme notes for the friendlies against Swansea and Aston Villa, chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi said: “A constant desire to improve is essential for any football club but I have the utmost faith that our current players can be competitive this season."
Ipswich last season and Burnley themselves the year before have shown what can be done with a relatively unheralded group of players whose team spirit has carried them through the challenges of a 46-game Championship season.
Let's hope the Reds can get close to emulating that this time around.
