David Peace's novel won numerous awards but his portrayal of Brian Clough's ill-fated spell as Leeds United manager did not portray the legendary boss in the best of light.
The film version will reportedly rectify that, with football choreographer Simon Clifford saying: "David's book was very dark and didn't meet with everyone's approval.
"Brian is one of the funniest people I've ever met and the script is a lot lighter than the book and shows Brian in his true light.
"Because I know several members of the Clough family, I did have to think about getting involved, but when I heard John McGovern and Dave Mackay, two of his favourite former players, were in that swung it for me.
"From what I've seen on set so far it looks a great film."
