Tipped for big things as a youngster when his performances for Oxford United earned a move to Italian Serie B side Verona, things never quite clicked into place for Davies until he made Chesterfield the ninth club of his professional career in the summer of 2010.
At the b2net Stadium he blossomed under the management of John Sheridan, netting 23 league goals as the Spireites won League Two.
Having only signed a one-year deal with the club it meant the chase was on for Davies' signature and despite interest from Reading he made a summer move to Oakwell to team up with new Barnsley manager Keith Hill.
And if pre-season form is anything to go by Davies will be causing plenty of headaches for Steve McClaren and his men at the weekend, two goals against Scunthorpe last Saturday making it four in five already for his new club.
