The Reds lifted themselves to within a point of the play-off places with a 2-0 home win over Burnley as two goals from substitute David McGoldrick ended a run of nine games without victory.
Davies revealed that he had only 18 players available at the City Ground on Tuesday night - some of whom were not fully fit and had been patched up.
A back spasm suffered by Nathan Tyson made him the seventh player to be ruled out, with Chris Cohen suspended and Robbie Findley, Joel Lynch, Paul Anderson, Kelvin Wilson and Dexter Blackstock all injured.
"There's no doubt we missed the pace of Tyson, Anderson and Findley - that's a huge amount of pace out of the side and Cohen is a big loss obviously," said Davies. "Blackstock has been forgotten about so there's top players missing which always makes life difficult.
"When you've got an 18-man squad, you expect reaction and that's exactly what we've got. I can't fault them. They're fantastic to work with and they've given us everything they've got."
