The influential midfielder may return for the Boxing Day clash with Doncaster and McGovern is looking forward to Commons' linking up with striker Nathan Tyson.
He told the Evening Post: "He (Commons) is the most creative player in the team, not just in midfield, so he's a player you are always going to miss.
"What all successful sides have is a player who can get up with and beyond the strikers.
"Ljungberg does that superbly for Arsenal and Frank Lampard does it in the Chelsea team.
"Forest have not had that in recent times, but it is something Kris is capable of, whether he plays out wide or in the middle.
"And with him and Nathan Tyson in the side, they have two players who are capable of giving opposition defences something to think about."
