A number of Championship clubs have identified the highly-regarded forward as the man to get them over the line in their respective promotion and play-off battles.
They are said to include Forest's weekend conquerors Norwich City but reports on Wednesday morning suggest that Dougie Freedman will get to work with the player for the remaining weeks of the campaign.
That may be as Arsenal see Akpom's route to first-team football being less crowded at the City Ground with Britt Assombalonga out for the long-term and Dexter Blackstock having sustained an injury at Carrow Road.
In comparison, Norwich and Bournemouth (the other interested party) seem to have more options up front for Akpom to battle with.
Update: Akpom's signing has been confirmed on loan until 31 May. He will link up with the Reds after playing for England Under-20's against USA on Sunday.
