The forward missed the midweek defeat at Hull City and manager Mick McCarthy was planning for the Forest fixture with him.
Quoted in the East Anglian Daily Times however, McCarthy said: "He came to my office this morning with Matt Byard, the physio, and said ‘I want to be considered, I want to be in contention, I think I’m okay’.
"And he’s trained this morning, so I’m delighted with that. That’ll be a real plus if he’s fit."
Tommy Oar and Cole Skuse could also return as Ipswich look to end a run of six games without a win.
27-year-old Nottingham-born McGoldrick made 63 league appearances for the Reds, just over half as a substitute, between 2009 and 2013, scoring 8 times.
