The 31-year-old, who is currently on loan until the end of the season from Everton, runs out of contract this summer and will be looking for a new club.
Kinnear said: "He is out of contract at the end of the season, but I understand one or two
clubs are sniffing around,"
"I'd like to keep him, but cannot afford his salary. Maybe we can offer something similar over a longer period."
He has made some impressive performances for the Reds this season and adds experience to the back-four. He would create stronger competition for Darren Ward and Barry Roche next season should Kinnear grab his signature.
Sheffield United and Bolton are supposedly interested in the former Oldham man.
