The 27-year-old forward, who joined his hometown-club on a free transfer in the summer, strained ankle ligaments in United's 2-1 win against Coventry.
He told BladesWorld: "At the moment we just have to wait and see how the ankle progresses - we'll have a better idea later in the week."
Lester is likely to recieve a good reception from the Forest fans should he play and he still regularly socialises with his former team-mates.
Former Forest players Darren Huckerby and Chris Bart-Williams have joined Division One rivals. Huckerby has joined Norwich for a three-month loan and and Bart-Williams has joined Ipswich Town for a one-month loan deal.
