The Reds are six points adrift of safety, a gap that could be exteded to seven if Cardiff win their game in hand at Leicester tonight with only three games remaining.
Although Megson has not yet given up hope of pulling off the greatest escape he said: "We owe it to the supporters, ourselves and the football club.
"It is a big thing to ask because we haven't done it all season but if we win three games on the trot and still go down, then we can't do much more than that.
"Each game that goes by without us taking three points, our grip on Championship football becomes more tenuous, but we have to keep going."
