Both sides had plenty to play for as Millwall faced Nottingham Forest at the New Den on Saturday afternoon with the Lions looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone and the Reds still aiming to make it into the top-six.
Billy Davies and his side, backed by over 2,000 travelling fans, went into the match knowing that chief play-off rivals Leicester had lost at home on Friday night while Bolton Wanderers faced a trip to champions Cardiff City.
Davies made two changes to his side, Danny Collins and Dan Harding returning for Chris Cohen and Sam Hutchnson and saw his men take an early lead as Halford swept the visitors in front.
Half-time came with the Reds still a goal in front and they maintained their slender advantage through to the end to ensure that the season goes down to its final game next weekend.
