The England under-21 boss and former Reds legend called the decision to employ the former national team boss a 'great appointment' and believes McClaren's record stands up to scrutiny.
"At club level, Steve has been fantastically successful with what he is working with," Pearce told the Nottingham Evening Post.
"Then he has gone abroad and won a championship with a club (FC Twente) who had not won it before.
"He has managed in Germany and he is an outstanding coach, being involved with Manchester United when they won the European Cup. He has so much experience and sometimes in this country we do not revere our coaches in the way we should."
