The 30-year-old central defender is a free agent after leaving Preston and well-known to Forest boss Billy Davies from his time at Deepdale.
Sheffield Wednesday, managed by another ex-North End gaffer in Alan Irvine, are also being linked.
Mawene made 174 league appearances for Preston following his 2004 move from Derby County.
