Allthough Andy Reid's second goal was disputed by Queens Park Rangers after the referee over-ruled an offside flag, Billy Davies' side were worthy winners against a team containing a host of big names in their starting XI.
Makeshift striker Greg Halford opened the scoring in front of 22,721 and was the player in an offside position when Reid wrapped things up, capping an outstanding display from the Irish midfielder.
Although Halford's strike was Forest's first goal in three games, the Reds have now kept four consecutive clean sheets and lie 5th in the Championship.
This time last year a 4-2 win against Leeds United was not enough to save Sean O'Driscoll from the sack but Davies will have few worries on that score as the same side prepare to come to the City Ground on Sunday.
