Shorey has been on loan with Billy Davies' side for the past two months and has played a key role in Forest climbing into second spot in the table.
But Villa boss Martin O'Neill has recalled the former England international because of a shin injury to first-choice left-back Stephen Warnock.
Shorey was on the substitutes' bench for Wednesday night's home clash with Arsenal with Luke Young switching from right-back to fill Warnock's role.
Shorey had started the season as Villa's first choice but the arrival of Warnock for £8million from Blackburn led to him losing his place.
Davies has indicated he would like to sign Shorey for the remainder of the current campaign on loan.
But the fact O'Neill has brought him back to Villa Park suggests Warnock's injury could involve a lengthy absence from action.
